Laura H Tutoring

I decided to start my own personal tutoring business in May 2020, fresh from having my third son, and ready for an exciting challenge. I had undertaken a degree in Philosophy and English Literature, and a Master’s degree in Philosophy as an adult, and enjoyed every moment of the learning process. This made me reflect on my learning as a child and teenager, and how I wished this had been a more comprehensive and positive experience. Having spent many years training colleagues in a vocational role and working as a foreign language tutor with Chinese students, I decided to expand my teaching opportunities, and try to make a difference in the lives of young people now, with the aim of improving their learning experience and building their confidence.

And boy, has it been an amazing journey so far. I have students in maths, English, reading, GCSEs, primary schoolers, secondary schoolers, home-schoolers, adults learners, those with additional needs such as ADHD, autism, dyslexia and anxiety, A levellers, essay-writers, exam preparers and more. And what a joy each and every one of them is to teach.

 

I undertake most of my lessons online using the easy app ‘zoom’, which has many interactive features, so students can be in the comfort of their own homes whilst getting a one-to-one personal experience. I also provide small in-person group lessons for local home-schoolers called ‘Let’s Discuss’ – a way of building skills in debating, researching, philosophical enquiry and giving them an opportunity to spend time with other home-schoolers in a safe, engaging environment.

 

I take an individual-focused approach to all my lessons, drawing out the student’s needs, preparing personal development and learning plans, including games and quizzes as part of learning, as well as using repetition, application, breaking down of processes and ideas.
